| “GIVE PENSIONERS R1500 PER MONTH” |
18 February 2010
The Minority Front Members of Parliament Mr. A. Rajbansi, Mr. R. Bhoola and Mrs. S. Rajbansi have all expressed extreme disappointment with the low increase of R70 per month for ordinary Pensioners and R10 per month for Child Support Grant.
These amounts, according to the Minority Front will be swallowed up by inflation and the rise in prices of foodstuff. Mr. Rajbansi says that the extra twenty five cents on a liter of fuel and the proposed electricity tariff increases will have an effect on inflation and rising prices.
When the grant was R800 per month the Minority Front fought very hard to increase it to R1000 per month and now the R1080 per month is completely outdated.
Mr. Rajbansi said that 25% of South Africa’s population relies on these grants as the sole income. They have to pay rent, electricity and waters charges. The Minority Front also demands that where there is hardship Distress Relief Grant be given to those who are collecting Pension.
Mr. Rajbansi said that R1080 per month is for below the poverty datum line and will work very very hard to increase the grant. The Minority Front condemns the sixth billion rand for defense. The Minority Front says that instead of guns, give the people food.
