MF ANGRY ABOUT RELIGIOUS SITES

29 May 2009

The full Council of the eThekwini Municipality by a majority vote rejected an MF’s motion to lift the ban on the allocation of religious sites to needy Christian, Hindu and Islamic organizations.

The ANC voted against the MF’s motion and resulted in a very serious setback to religious organizations that have no premises. The MF motion was supported by the IFP, DA and the ACDP.

Mr A Rajbansi, the Leader of the Minority Front said that a refusal to release religious sites to deserving religious organizations did not take place in the City for 100 years and it is sad that the ANC in eThekwini is behaving in such a negative fashion.

Temples, churches and mosques contribute to sound community development and enhances the social character of the environment.

There are numerous organizations that are practising religion under very awkward conditions without premises and the ANC should show religious tolerance and accommodation.

Mr Rajbansi said that the Minority Front is taking note of the ANC’s attitude and may take the matter to the Human Rights Commission.
