The MEC for Sport and Recreation is seen with the principal of Victoria Primary Mr. Lajeeth Maharaj during the symbolic opening of the combi-court. Joining them were the Head Department, Mrs. Sumayya Khan, Chief Director- Mr. SB Sing and the president of the Tongaat Sports Council, Mr. Kooga Padayachee.
The lack of decent sporting facility is now a thing of the past for learners and educators of one of KwaZulu-Natal’s historic and poorest school.
The Victoria Primary Tongaat, north of Durban now boasts a brand new multi-sports facility also know as a combi-court. Thanks to the generosity of the MEC for Sport and Recreation, Mr. Amichand Rajbansi who opened a modern multi-sport facility at he school today.
Combi-courts cater for volleyball, netball, tennis and basketball. In addition, the Victoria Primary facility also accommodates futsal - or indoor soccer. Tongaat leads in futsal and volleyball.
The facility adds to a list of almost 90 facilities comprising grounds and combi-courts that the Department of Sport and Recreation has built in its short period of its existence.
MEC Rajbansi was accompanied by the Head of Department and other senior officials of his Department for the official handing over of function which was also attended by parents and members of the community.
“This facility must also be used by the neighboring schools and the community, said the MEC.
The school principal, Mr. Lajeeth Maharaj was very ecstatic about the multi-purpose facility.
“I want to thank the MEC for choosing his school for the location of the facility. I believe sport can be used as a vehicle to facilitate change,” he said
He boasted about the good performance and achievements of his school in sports. Amongst the schools past learners is international cricketer Hassim Amla, who still lives just a few blocks from the school.
Mr. Maharaj said the school and the community were grateful to the Department and in particular to Mr. Rajbansi for his vision and commitment to grassroots development.
“Interventions such as the one done by the Department of Sport and Recreation could only enhance the quality of learning at the school.” said Mr. Maharaj.
Mr. Rajbansi said h e has also built similar facilities at nearby Hambanathi and Waterloo townships.
